MUMBAI: Realty developers have requested Indian Railways to help provide necessary logistical support for migrant workers to return to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to overcome the shortage of construction workers.

Developers body CREDAI MCHI has separately written to Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra government to help facilitate affordable and convenient railway transportation for workers, from states including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha.

While workers are returning, the number needs to improve to resume complete construction work and additional transport facilities can improve the inflow, the body said.

In the backdrop of Covid19 pandemic, migrant workers had rushed back to their hometowns amid lockdown. Following the partial lifting of lowdown across various states, they had started returning on their own as well on enticed by various incentives offered by developers. While the workers’ numbers have increased across states, Mumbai being a Covid19 hotspot has witnessed a relatively lower turnout.

Conscious of the risky circumstances amid the pandemic, developers are deploying safety measures at their construction sites to ensure the adherence of all government specified protocols related to social distancing, doctors’ on-site visits, fumigation, staggered meal times and quarantine facilities.
