Buying a new Jio postpaid plan? Pay up to Rs 1,800 as security deposit

Reliance Jio customers will have to pay a security deposit to subscribe to the postpaid plans that the telco unveiled last month, media reports said quoting a filing with Trai.

This is being seen as an attempt by Jio to lure away postpaid customers from its rivals Vodafone Idea and Airtel.

The JioPostpaid Plus scheme was unveiled last month with five different tariff options. The starting plan, at Rs 399, offers offers 75 GB data, free calling and SMS. Customers also get Amazon Prime, Netflix and Disney+Hotstar VIP subscription. It also offer 200 GB data rollover facility.

The five plans range from the basic Rs 399 one to the premium Rs 1,499 one. The new offerings by Jio could shift the turf of the tariff battle from prepaid to postpaid, analysts said.

According to a regulatory filing with Trai by the telco, customers of the new postpaid plans will have to shell out money in the range of Rs 500 - Rs 1,800 as security deposits.

For the basic (Rs 399) plan, customers will have to deposit an amount of Rs 500 as security.

For the Rs. 599 Postpaid Plus plan, the required security deposit is Rs 750. For the Rs 799 and the Rs 999 plans, subscribers will need to deposit Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,200, respectively.

The Rs 1,499 plan carries the highest security deposit, i.e. Rs 1,800.
