NEW DELHI: Japan’s Rakuten Mobile and Germany’s Telefonica Deutschland said telecom operators should not look at developing everything on their own and that instead they should bring in partners to develop technologies and solutions.

Rakuten Mobile chief technology officer Tareq Amin said it is impossible to develop everything internally or have skill sets that cover everything end-to-end.

Mallik Rao, chief technology and information officer at Telefonica Deutschland (O2 Germany), said a telecom operator can develop things in-house but there has to be a “right balance. “Telefonica developed the entire prepaid in-house... unless it is adopted globally, unless you have a scale, you can’t sustain over a longer period. My belief is any solution should be at least regional, at least global, if not universal across the world,” he said at ETTelecom’s Digital Telco virtual summit.

Their comments come in reply to a question on Reliance Jio Infocomm’s approach to build 5G in-house.

“We have seen CDMA, which could not sustain for quite a long period of time. So it is important.. I’m sure RIL would be completely looking at (it) as a global scale and what I strongly believe in participating and also leveraging the technology,” said Rao.

Amin, however, said there could be a possibility of technical collaboration with Jio for the development of network technologies in the 5G domain.

Jio recently said that it has built its end-to-end 5G network stack which it intends to offer to global telcos after deploying in India across circles. It is currently looking for partners to fully develop the 5G portfolio and will soon start discussions with various local players in the domain of system integration and local manufacturing of its 5G gear.

Rao said “for me, a strong belief is no one company has all the solutions for the challenges which the industry is facing and the customers are needing”.

Rakuten Mobile, on the other hand, has developed its own platform, Rakuten Cloud Platform (RCP), which is essentially packaging its mobile network strategy into a product, which it wants to offer to global telecom operators, including those in India.
