    Reliance Jio grows user base in March, while Airtel, Voda Idea lose due to lockdown pangs

    Airtel and VIL though have reported customer bases of 283.66 million and 291.1 million respectively in their March quarter earnings numbers respectively, while Jio reported a user base of 388 million in the fiscal fourth quarter.

    Jio widened customer market share to 33.47% (32.99%), while Airtel and VIL’s marginally narrowed to 28.31% (28.35%) and 27.57% (28.05%) respectively, over the previous month respectively, Trai data showed.
    Reliance Jio Infocomm outgunned its two older incumbent carriers, adding 4.68 million mobile phone users in March 2020, taking its subscriber count well past 387 million, signalling that consumers had taken in their stride the steep tariff hikes the telecom market leader took last December.

    Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (VIL), by contrast, lost 1.26 million and 6.35 million customers respectively in March, in the aftermath of the December 2019 hikes and initial lockdown pangs in late March.

    Last December, Airtel, VIL and Jio had increased bundled prepaid tariffs for the first time in 3 years by around 14-33%.

    Data collated by the telecom regulator showed India's mobile user base fell by 2.84 million to nearly 1.158 billion in March.

    Jio’s March user base swelled to 387.51 million, while Airtel’s and VIL’s fell to 327.81 million and 319.16 million, as per latest telco subscriber data collated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) and issued on Tuesday.

    Visitor Location Register (VLR), a key metric reflecting the number of active subscribers on a mobile network, indicated that 96.18% of the users were active for Airtel, 92% for VIL and 80.93% for Jio.
