NEW DELHI: Mukesh Ambani-driven Reliance Jio continues to top the chart for 4G download speed by recording the highest average 4G download speed of 21.0 Mbps in the month of September, according to data published by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
Reliance Jio’s 4G download speed of 21.0Mbps is more than double the speeds recorded by incumbents Airtel, Vodafone and Idea individually – 8.3 Mbps, 6.9 Mbps and 6.4 Mbps respectively. Although Vodafone India and Idea Cellular have merged to become Vodafone Idea, they still operate the two brands separately.

However, Jio witnessed a slight dip in the 4G download speed where in the previous month it had recorded speed of 21.3 Mbps. Meanwhile, Airtel showed modest improvement in the 4G download speed from August’s 8.2 Mbps to 8.3 Mbps in September.

Vodafone’s 4G download speed dipped considerable from 7.7 Mbps in August to 6.9 Mbps in September. Idea’s speed on the other hand witnessed marginal improvement in the same duration from 6.1 Mbps to 6.4 Mbps.

Idea led the chart on the 4G upload speed front by recording highest upload speed of 5.4 Mbps, closely followed by Vodafone at 5.2 Mbps in the month of September. Jio and Airtel recorded 4G upload speeds of 4.2 Mbps and 3.1 Mbps respectively.

While Trai’s speed results show Reliance Jio as the leader in 4G download speeds, Airtel secured a lead in both overall and 4G download speeds in OpenSignal’s October report.

The Sunil Mittal-driven telco recorded overall download speeds of 9.6 Mbps and 4G download speed of 10.7 Mbps as per OpenSignal’s report based on data collected from June 1 to August 29.

The average speed is calculated by TRAI based on the data that it collects with the help of its MySpeed application on a real-time basis.
