Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways to start flights from Delhi

    Synopsis

Japan's All Nippon Airways is set to expand its India network and start flights from the capital city of Delhi beginning October 28 this year.

MUMBAI: After trying to expand in the Indian market for some time now, Japan's largest airline company All Nippon Airways (ANA) is set to expand its India network and start flights from the capital city of Delhi beginning October 28 this year, the airline said. Currently ANA operates flights from only Mumbai.

The expansion in the Indian market, the airline says is part of a wider group corporate strategy to get foothold in markets in Asia where there is still demand-supply mismatch as far as connectivity to the US market is concerned. ANA flew 43 million passengers last year and is the ninth largest airline in the world in by revenues which were $17 billion.

"By expanding its route network in the growing Asian market, ANA aims to capitalize on the projected increase in demand for indirect flights between Asia and North America via Japan. This will allow ANA to accelerate the expansion of its international network, which is a key pillar of its FY2012-13 Corporate strategy, and further strengthen ANA's business model as a network carrier," the airline said in a statement today.

The airline will open bookings for the flight from July 12 and will be pressing a 767-300 ER aircraft on the route. Earlier last year the Japanese carrier tried to launch operations on the Dreamliner or the 787 from India as it is the launch customer for Boeing's latest aircraft but for some reasons not specified could not start these services on this aircraft type.

National carrier Air India too has 27 of the Boeing Dreamliners on order but is awaiting a nod from the government to get the deliveries of this aircraft as there are still unresolved compensation issues with the US aircraft manufacturer for delays.
