Challans worth Rs 577 cr issued since Sept 1

New Delhi: Traffic authorities across 18 states issued 38 lakh challans worth Rs 577 crore since September this year after the new penalties for traffic violations came into effect, parliament was informed on Thursday.
As per information available in the database of the National Informatics Centre (NIC), 38,39,406 traffic challans in 18 states were issued since September 1. The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 made with the intention of disciplining road users resulted in increase of traffic penalties by several times.

The total challans have been issued for Rs 5,77,51,79,895, minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari said in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha. The challans are being referred to courts, while details of revenue are not available, Gadkari said.

The data is available for Chandigarh, Pondicherry, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Delhi, Rajasthan, Bihar, Dadra Nagar Haveli, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. Tamil Nadu has seen the highest number of challans at 14,13,996, while the least were issued in Goa at 58.

Meanwhile Uttar Pradesh saw around 9,83,326 traffic violations and over 4,81,378 violations were booked in Delhi.

Fatalities due to road accidents have come down compared to last year in several states during the September-October period.

As per data available for nine states, Puducherry saw the highest rate of reduction in road accidents consequent deaths at 30.7%. Uttar Pradesh, which accounts for the highest number of deaths on account of road accidents every year, saw a reduction of accidents by 9.8%.
