Alexa, turn on the lights: Amazon is set to roll out its voice assistant on low-powered devices

Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently announced that it is working to bring Alexa's voice control capabilities to low-powered devices as well. At present, the device has a minimum requirement of 100MB on-device RAM and an ARM Cortex "A" class microprocessor.
With this move, Amazon will make Alexa available to hardware manufacturers who wish to include the voice assistant on their devices, a report in TechCrunch said. The update will allow manufacturers to create 'Alexa built-in' gadgets with low-powered chips and and low as 1MB of RAM.

Amazon also aims at cost-cutting initiatives by transferring processing, retrieving, buffering and decoding abilities of Alexa to the cloud.

AWS, on the other hand, has opened up opportunities for its customers to create their own machine-learning image analysis system with a new feature called Amazon Rekognition Custom Labels, set to go on the floor on Tuesday.

AWS also aims at improving connectivity and control services to make life easier for IoT developers.

According to a report, Amazon's latest move will allow more number of users a chance to enjoy Alexa's ability to pursue petty tasks like switching on and switching off light bulbs. However, complex tasks like media retrieval and audio decoding cannot be undertaken.
