NEW DELHI: In yet another setback for Facebook, its photo-sharing app Instagram went down in multiple markets including India on Wednesday. US, EU and Australia were the worst hit with several users flocking to Twitter to report the matter and the hashtag ‘Instagram down’ trending on rival Twitter. While some reports stated the outage lasted for 2-3 hours, others claimed it lasted for about an hour before Instagram was back up again.

“We are aware that some users are having trouble accessing their Instagram accounts. We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible,” said a statement from Facebook at the time of the outage. Facebook did not comment on the impact on Indian users and did not specify what caused the outage. Users said they were not able to see pictures or profiles and saw the message “Unable to refresh feed” on their apps. Prashant Puri, co-founder and CEO of global digital marketing platform AdLift, estimated potential global revenue loss to be in the range of $1-1.2 million for an hour on Instagram.

“E marketer is estimating Instagram’s revenues to be about $8 billion. We are just entering quarter four, which is typically 32% of the revenues. So it should come to about $22-25 million a day. For an hour it could be around $1-1.2 million,” he added. “The down detector which mapped the outage showed Europe, the US and parts of Latin America and APAC being hit. So it was pretty much a global outage. It happened towards late evening in the US and early morning in Europe and towards the middle of the day in the APAC region.

It did not happen at 2am or 3am in any of these geographies so it will impact revenues,” Puri stated. Sanjay Vasudeva, founder and CEO of influencer marketing firm BuzzOne whose clients include Flipkart, Pepsico, IBM, Motorola, Titan, and ICICI Prudential, said the shutdown did not cause any grave trouble to the brands, as while doing an ad purchase brands get a longer window to run their campaigns. “Influencer campaigns are planned strategically with posts scheduled across varied platforms.

The Instagram deactivation for such a short time has caused no hindrance since the platform was also equally inactive for consumers,” he added. The incident spawned a series of memes on Twitter with some finding relief that the issue did not have anything to do with their individual accounts. Instagram is popular among users for food posts and pictures chronicling their daily lives. On Friday, Facebook reported the worst breach in its history stating that hackers had breached 50 million user accounts globally.
