On Saturday, which also happened to be the 74th Independence Day, ace cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni sent the country into a frenzy by announcing his retirement from international cricket. In former-batsman Virendra Sehwag’s words, Captain Cool’s retirement is not the ‘azaadi’ anyone asked for.
In no time, the social media was flooded with messages from the cricket fraternity and B-Town stars, paying tribute to the legendary batsman and wishing him all the luck for the second innings of his life. However, it was brands like Zomato, Google India, Parle G and PayTm that stole the cake (and the attention) with their witty retorts and fun take on the legend’s retirement.

Famous food-ordering app Zomato, in what can be called an unprecedented move, gave 100% off on food orders placed in Ranchi, Jharkhand as a ‘gift for the city that gifted India a legend’. Dhoni was born into a Rajput family in Ranchi and made his way to international cricket from a small town.

The 100% discount was available from 7 pm on August 16 to midnight upto Rs 183, which is Dhoni's top score in ODI cricket, against Sri Lanka in the year 2005.

Google India, in a tweet, wrote that they have tried ‘searching’ but there isn’t going to be anyone like Dhoni.

The dairy brand Amul India, posted a topical cartoon, using Kishore Kumar’s famous song ‘Ruk Jana Nahin’, and wrote: “O Mahi, O Rahi…tu kahin na ruka haar ke!’

Parle G, too, sent out a tweet to pay a tribute to the 39-year-old, writing ‘you stump quicker than we melt for chai'

KFC India posted a picture of an empty chicken wing bucket and wrote ‘The Greatest Finisher’. ‘Always came through when it was crunch time. #MSDhoni,’ KFC captioned the tweet.

Fintech company PayTm thanked Dhoni for all the memories and wrote, ‘More than 1929 reasons that we'll miss you.’

Amazon Prime Video, on the other hand, remembered the night of April 2, 2011 when Dhoni helped India lift the World Cup.

Netflix India wished there was a way to time travel and watch Dhoni and Raina play again.
