The year 2020 has tested the patience, grit and determination of the global population quite unlike any other year. With an economic crisis looming over the heads of the ones who managed to survive the global pandemic, those who faced a personal loss during this gruelling time had it worse.
Opening up about her tragic loss, in what can be called the first-of-its-kind personal essay penned by a high-profile British Royal, Meghan Markle, for the New York Times, titled ‘The Losses We Share’, opened up about the gut-wrenching experience of losing her newborn in a miscarriage this year in July.
The 39-year-old, who welcomed her first child, baby Archie, in 2019 with the former Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, described the ordeal of losing a loved one and the ‘unbearable grief’ of losing her child.
"I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second."
"In the pain of our loss, my husband and I discovered that in a room of 100 women, 10 to 20 of them will have suffered from miscarriage," wrote Meghan, adding that the topic still remained taboo and riddled with unwarranted pain.
For those familiar with the Internet and its downsides, it won’t be surprising to know that there were some trolls who directed hate towards the former royal. But, much to the dismay of misogynistic haters and venom-spewing tabloids, there were plenty of netizens who appreciated Markle’s heartfelt essay.
For every hate comment, there was an empathetic one which lauded the Duchess for destigmatising the narrative around miscarriage and openly talking about a phenomenon that effects millions of women around the world.
This Twitter handle, for instance, lauded Markle for being brave and honest about her experience and sent her thoughts to the grieving family of three.
Others drove home the point that Markle is just a simple woman who wants the world to understand her pain.
Women who have been in the same position as Markle thanked her for sharing her experience as it is always comforting to know that you are not alone.
This Twitter user debunked every hater’s accusation with logic and sass.
‘You have a right to your truth and a right to tell it’, wrote this fan.
Not only will Markle’s New York Times op-ed normalise talking about miscarriages and pregnancy-related issues like postpartum depression, but also urge women to speak up about such issues which are otherwise spoken about in a ‘hush, hush’ manner.
