    HIGHLIGHT: Smooth performance

There is no certainty when we will be able to use 5G bandwidth in India, but that has not stopped smartphone OEMs from launching 5G-ready handsets. Joining the bandwagon is Oppo, with its first 5G-enabled smartphone — the Reno 5 Pro 5G. The device is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ SoC, which is MediaTek’s flagship processor and is said to be in the same range as Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. It comes with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. Thanks to the internals, the performance is lag-free and smooth. The Reno 5 Pro 5G feels quite smooth, courtesy the 90Hz refresh rate of the display.

The smartphone offers a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with 2400×1080p resolution. The display offers a pleasant viewing experience with vivid colours and sharp image quality. The Android 11-based ColorOS 11.1 has a number of customisable settings — including that of the display. The Reno 5 Pro is a premium-looking handset. It is available in two colour options — Astral Blue and Starry Black. Our review unit, in Astral Blue, had a glittery back panel that some might feel as being a little rough — especially if you are used to smooth back panels. On the plus side, this eliminates the issue of fingerprint smudges.

With the Oppo Reno 5 Pro 5G, users get a 4350mAh battery that offers more than the usual average screen time. The 65W fast charge support is impressive. One key highlight of the device is its camera that boasts of video capabilities and low-light photography. The cameras are able to capture good videos in dim light using its AI Highlight Video feature, however, the quality of the video is a bit over-processed. The device houses a 64MP main camera, 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, 2MP macro camera and 2MP mono camera.

The overall image quality turned out to be impressive as the photos appear rich in colour and didn’t lack any details. For Rs 35,990, the Oppo Reno 5 Pro 5G offers lasting battery life, premium looks and powerful processor — making it a good buy in the affordable premium segment.
