When security is being monkeyed around with at airports, authorities are not expected to grin and bear it. They have to show claws to the violators and evict them. But if the intruders make a monkey out of conventional forms of security, out-of-the-box thinking is required. Bearing in mind the cost of technological upgrades of functioning systems, the officials of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport in Ahmedabad must be complimented for their ingenuity when it comes to dealing with the langur menace there.

A man dressed as a bear, recently seen physically chasing away trespassing simians — Semnopithecus, or Hanuman langur — is certainly cheaper than installing a brand new, specialised ape-resistant perimeter security system. All that’s really required are furry costumes from a party store, and the redeployment of existing staff (or new ones) as hand-flailing Anthropoid Dispersal Officers, ready to bear down on incursive apes of all kinds.

Bearing in mind that the langurs’ guerrilla attacks apparently happen only once a day at a specific time, only one such job — that too part-time — has come up in Ahmedabad. However, as that airport is not the only one suffering from monkey business, this could offer countrywide employment opportunities. But only fake bears must be utilised in order to rule out grizzly consequences.
