The Prince and the poppadums: William’s takeaway order underlines Indian food’s link with British football

    Synopsis

Current restrictions on spectators at sporting events must have affected post-match beer-and-curry sales at local ‘Indian’ restaurants in the UK.

Prince William must be complimented for not only connecting with the British public’s love for Indian food items but also ordering them from the local Indian eatery to be palace-delivered by cab.
Prince Charles’ now-familiar habit of opting for an Indianstyle namaste instead of shaking hands has not caught on among his peer group much less the wider public; knocking elbows appears to be the more favoured if inelegant alternative for many in the Occident.

Luckily, his son Prince William’s recent Indian overture already has a long-standing popular appeal in the UK — samosa, chicken tikka masala, poppadums and mango chutney. He must be complimented for not only connecting with the British public’s love for these food items but also ordering them from the local Indian eatery to be palace-delivered by cab. Things have certainly changed from the time when his great-great-great-great grandmother Queen Victoria satiated her new-found love for curry — said to be prompted by her young ‘munshi’ Abdul Karim — with weekly Indian meals cooked in the palace kitchens.

The future British monarch’s order for a poppadums-and-pint powwow with legendary striker Peter Crouch also underlined the inextricable link between Indian food and that other British obsession: football. Current restrictions on spectators at sporting events must have affected post-match beer-and-curry sales at local ‘Indian’ restaurants in the UK, so this royal endorsement of the British habit of a weekly Indian meal — even as takeaway — will come in handy indeed.
