I want to invest in mutual funds. I am ready to wait for seven to 10 years. Which mutual funds can I invest to get higher returns? I am ready to invest Rs 50,000 per year. I invested Rs 20,000 in ICICI ELSS last year.

It seems, you are new to mutual funds. If so, we would strongly recommend you to seek the help of a mutual fund advisor in your locality before investing. We have noticed that often new investors need personalised guidance in the initial years of their investment life.

We always ask investor to choose a mutual fund scheme based on their financial goals, investment horizon, and risk profile. In practice, it means conservative equity investors should choose large cap mutual fund schemes or aggressive hybrid schemes; investors with moderate risk profile can choose multi cap mutual fund schemes and aggressive investors should invest mostly in mid cap or small cap scheme.

Investors can also add a scheme with lower risk if they want to reduce the risk in their portfolio. Similarly, investors with higher appetite can also add schemes with higher risk to the portfolio to enhance returns.

For example, a moderate investor investing mostly in multi cap mutual funds may add a large cap to the portfolio to diversify and reduce the overall risk. Or, the investor might invest a small part of the corpus in a sector scheme to enhance the returns and diversify the mutual fund portfolio.
