MUMBAI: Reliance Jio Infocomm has so far converted at least 50 million subscribers to become Prime members, a company executive said. This means almost half of the 100 million-plus customers who had signed up for the Mukesh Ambani-owned telecom company’s promotional offers are ready to opt for its paid services.

Jio crossed the 50-million mark on Tuesday, said the company executive, who did not wish to be named. The company’s second promotional offer, Happy New Year, ends on March 31. In the beginning of this month, Ambani announced subscribers a ‘Prime’ membership on payment of a one-time fee of Rs 99.

The membership, available for one year, gives the member an option to choose from several data packs starting from Rs 149. “The Jio Prime membership scheme has received enthusiastic response from Reliance Jio customers.

We are pleased to note that millions of customers are joining the scheme every day, signifying their interest in the attractive offers,” a company spokesperson said in an emailed response to ET’s queries. Jio, which launched services on September 5, disrupted the Indian telecom industry with its ‘Welcome’ and ‘Happy New Year’ offers which offered free voice and data services along with access to its digital content ecosystem.

In an analyst presentation made early March, Jio said it expected to gain more than 50% of revenue market share based on huge expected data demand and growth in the next three-four years. Jio has been one of the main causes behind consolidation in the Indian telecom industry.
