Map misrepresentation: IT Ministry writes to Twitter, says ‘any attempt to disrespect integrity of India unacceptable’
NEW DELHI: The government of India has shot off a letter to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey expressing "disappointment and displeasure" over the wrong representation of Leh in its maps. The letter was sent on Wednesday evening by the Secretary of the ministry of electronics and IT (MEITY).

According to sources, Twitter had shown the geo-location of Leh as being a part of Jammu and Kashmir, People’s Republic of China. The letter has clarified that Leh is the headquarters of the Union Territory of Ladakh and both Ladakh as well as Jammu and Kashmir are integral and inalienable parts of India.

Conveying strong disapproval of the Government over misrepresentation of map of India, the stern letter by Ajay Sawhney has asked Twitter to respect the sensitivities of Indian citizens. “Any attempt by Twitter to disrespect sovereignty and integrity of India, which is also reflected by the maps, is totally unacceptable. The same is also unlawful,” a senior official told ET.

Giving a stern warning to Twitter, the letter has mentioned that such attempts not only brings disrepute to Twitter but also raises questions about its neutrality and fairness as an intermediary, the official added.

This came to light when a media professional recently travelled to Leh and tagged a picture on Twitter, which showed the wrong geo-location.

A Twitter spokesperson said "Twitter remains committed to working with the Government of India. We respect the sensitivities involved and have duly acknowledged the letter."

Sources within the company said that it become aware of this technical issue on Sunday, and its teams worked swiftly to investigate and resolve the concerned geotag issue.
