PATNA: With NDA getting a clear majority in Bihar, BJP and JDU leaders in Patna are now focussing on government formation. However, the modalities are yet to start as the state BJP leadership awaits instructions from the brass in Delhi.

“There will be a meeting of BJP parliamentary party in Delhi and then senior leaders will talk to chief minister Nitish Kumar,” Bihar’s deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi told ET. “Any decision on the next Cabinet and government formation will be taken only after that.”

Since BJP has emerged as the bigger party in the alliance, it will get the lion’s share in the new Bihar Cabinet and also important portfolios. “All these are minor issues and there is no confusion between us,” Modi said.

On Wednesday, Kumar spent his day at his residence and didn’t make any statement. JDU leaders Ashok Choudhary, Sanjay Jha and others met Kumar in the evening.

State BJP leaders repeatedly clarified that Kumar would be the next chief minister as per the pre-election arrangement. Party’s election management committee met in Patna and was attended by state president Sanjay Jaiswal, Union minister Nityanand Rai, state minister Mangal Pandey, Ram Kripal Yadav and other leaders. State general secretary (organisation) Nagendra Nath thanked the committee for success in the elections.

Kumar is likely to meet the governor on Thursday and hand over his resignation, which would start the process of forming the next government.

Sources in BJP told ET that since Diwali was on Saturday and most of the newly elected MLAs would be in their constituencies, meeting was now possible only next week. “There is no hurry to form the government. We have time till November 29,” another BJP leader told ET.
