Voting is an essential element of citizenship in a democracy, although it comes with specific conditions mandated by the government. Engaging in this democratic procedure involves registering as a voter and then participating by casting a ballot for a chosen candidate.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: How to find the nearest polling booth

Locating the correct polling booth within one's constituency is crucial for exercising this right.

    • Go to the website www.nvsp.in
    • Click on the option 'Know Your' to open the location
    • A page will open asking for your 'EPIC No' i.e, the voter ID number mentioned on your ID card
    • Enter the EPIC number and click on the 'Search' button
    • The booth name will appear and the booth level officer's (BLO) name and number.
Alternatively, individuals have the option to contact the voter helpline at 1950, ensuring they include the STD code of their city before dialing the number. They can also send an SMS with the format followed by their EPIC number to 1950 for assistance in locating the polling station.

Upon reaching the assigned polling booth during the designated voting hours, several procedural steps will take place to facilitate the voting process:

    1. The first polling official will verify the voter's details and ID proof.
    2. The second polling official will mark the voter's finger with ink, issue a slip, and record the voter's signature on Form 17A.
    3. The voter will submit the slip to the third polling official, display the inked finger, and proceed into the polling booth.
    4. Inside the polling booth, the voter will cast their vote by pressing the corresponding ballot button on the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) opposite the chosen candidate's symbol. A beep sound and red LED light confirmation will follow.
    5. The printed slip from the VVPAT machine will be verified, displaying the candidate's serial number, name, and symbol for 7 seconds before being sealed in the VVPAT box.
    6. Voters have the provision to select NOTA (None of the Above) if none of the candidates are satisfactory, which is the final option on the EVM.
