    Pandemic derails construction under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

    “Against the target of 2.02 crore houses allocated under the scheme till the financial year 2020-21, 1.50 crore houses or 75% have been completed so far,” minister of state for rural development Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said in a response to a question in Lok Sabha.

    Outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic has significantly derailed construction of rural houses under the government’s flagship Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Gramin in 2020-21, thus pulling down the cumulative achievement so far.
    “Against the target of 2.02 crore houses allocated under the scheme till the financial year 2020-21, 1.50 crore houses or 75% have been completed so far,” minister of state for rural development Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said in a response to a question in Lok Sabha.

    “Further, a total of over 12.20 lakh houses have been completed during the year 2021-22 against an estimated target of construction of 44.09 lakh houses under the scheme,” the minister for state added.

    The ministry of rural development is implementing Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana- Gramin (PMAY-G) to provide assistance to eligible rural households for construction of 2.95 crore pucca houses with basic amenities to achieve the objective of “Housing for All”.

    As per the statement, the rural development ministry is holding regular virtual meetings with the states and UTs to review the progress of the scheme. In addition, daily monitoring of the progress is being done on various parameters such as gaps in sanction of houses, provision of land to landless beneficiaries, cleaning of permanent wait list (PWL) of PMAY-G, gaps in release of central share or state matching share from treasury.

    Further, the review meetings are being held with states also for better understanding of the constraints being faced and redressing the same for increasing progress of PMAY-G.

    The Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana- Gramin (PMAY-G) is a centrally sponsored scheme and the funds are being shared by the central and state government in 60:40 ratio (90:10 in North Eastern State and hill states including Jammu & Kashmir & 100% central share in case of UTs including Ladakh).
