    94% of beneficiaries satisfied with free grain scheme: Piyush Goyal

    New Delhi: As many 94% of the 800 million beneficiaries of free foodgrain scheme during Covid-19 have been found satisfied with the government in a survey conducted by an independent agency.

    “It’s a record of sort that Food Corporation of India (FCI) with the help of state governments reached out to 800 million people. We are satisfied that everyone in the country could get enough food grains during the pandemic,” food minister Piyush Goyal said while addressing on the occasion of 57th foundation of Food Corporation of India (FCI).

    He said that FCI distributes 47.5 million tonnes of food grains every year to 800 million poor people at subsidised rates under national food security act (NFSA).

    “This year the corporation distributed additional 30.5 million tonnes of free food grains to NFSA beneficiaries under Prime Minsiter Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY) during the pandemic,” he said.

    Goyal said that the FCI has been mandated to connect farmers with consumers.

    “While purchasing produce form farmers at minimum support price, FCI has to distribute the grains at subsidised rates to people living in interiors. FCI has scaled up procurement centres by 50% to over 21,000 to reach out to farmers. It’s has the double duty to serve farmers as well as consumers,” he said.
