    Covid-19: September was worst as India added 41% of cases & 34% of deaths

    NEW DELHI: Active Covid-19 cases went up in India on Wednesday after registering a decline for two straight days even as September turned out to be the worst period for the country during the pandemic, accounting for the highest number of deaths in any month.

    With 1,173 fresh deaths on Wednesday, India’s Covid-19 toll went up to 98,628. As many as 33,255 of these deaths — or 33.7% of the total casualties — were recorded in September. This surpassed the previous worst month, August, when 28,859 deaths were recorded. July accounted for 19,122 deaths and June and May for 11,988 and 4,267 casualties, respectively.

    With 86,768 fresh cases on Wednesday, India’s Covid-19 caseload went beyond the 63-lakh mark to 63,06,802. September accounted for more than 41% of the caseload with 26,24,179 new infections. In contrast, 19,87,705 cases were recorded in the August, the previous worst month.

    Active cases rose marginally on Wednesday to 9,47,041 against 9,46,477 on Tuesday.

    A day after breaching the 10,000-mark for the first time, Karnataka registered 8,856 new cases on Wednesday and became the third state in the country after Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh to record more than six lakh cases.

    The number of daily casualties rose for the second straight day in Maharashtra with 481 fresh deaths reported on Wednesday against 430 on Tuesday. On Monday, the state’s casualties had dropped to 180. With 2654 fresh cases, Mumbai recorded its highest daily peak. The previous high was 2411 on September 17. The city reported 46 fresh casualties, higher than 41 deaths reported in Delhi on Wednesday.
