SRINAGAR: Manoj Sinha, who took charge as the lieutenant governor of Jammu & Kashmir on Friday, said he plans to initiate direct dialogue with people soon to end uncertainty and assured that there would be no discrimination.

“We need to establish a dialogue with the common people of Jammu and Kashmir. We don't have any agenda in that. There will be no discrimination against anyone. Constitution will be Gita in that,“ he said.

“There should be peace and stability in J&K; the situation of uncertainty should end, and terrorism should end,” Sinha told a few select journalists at the Raj Bhavan after taking oath in a brief ceremony. “Achieving all this along with accelerated development will be our aim, our mission,” he was quoted as saying. Sinha also stated that the process of dialogue would start in a few days.

Union minister Jitendra Singh and some BJP leaders from Jammu including Ashok Koul, Nirmal Singh and Jugal Kishore attended the ceremony. Rajya Sabha member of recently launched Apni Party, Nazir Ahmad Laway, too, was there.

MPs of National Conference and People’s Democratic Party, who were invited for the event, boycotted it.

Other than Doordarshan, PTI and ANI, the administration did not invite journalists for the function. Sinha talked briefly with them after the ceremony.

He reiterated that development of the region would remain the priority and there won’t be any bias against anyone. “Kashmir is heaven in India and I have been given an opportunity to play a role,” he said. “I will take the developmental projects started here further ahead.”

He said August 5 was an important day in the history of J&K as the region after years of isolation, joined the national mainstream.

Sinha succeeded former IAS officer Girish Chandra Murmu, who resigned on Wednesday night and was appointed Comptroller and Auditor General on Thursday.

However, regional political parties have expressed scepticism regarding his appointment.

“They appoint the people of their choice. We haven’t accepted the decision of August 5, so there was no reason for me to be there,” NC parliamentarian from northern Kashmir, Akbar Lone told ET.
