Farmers protest in Delhi live updates: Tension at borders, Metro shuts gates at some stations

Tension prevails at Delhi's borders in the wake of protesting farmers converging on the capital city.
Farmers headed towards Delhi are part of the march to protest Modi government's new farm laws. Protesting farmers have assembled in large numbers at the borders in tractor-trolleys carrying rations and other essentials for their protest.

Ealier, around 30 farmers' bodies from Punjab had declared plans to reach the capital via a number of routes — Lalru, Shambhu, Patiala-Pehowa, Patran-Khanauri, Moonak-Tohana, Ratia-Fatehabad and Talwandi-Sirsa.

Delhi Police, meanwhile, said that the agitating farmers won't be allowed to enter the city. Today morning, tear gas was used to disperse protesters at the the Singhu Border that connects Delhi with Haryana.

The 'Delhi Chalo' protest march by farmers is scheduled from November 26 to November 28. The protesters plan to hold a dharna wherever they are stopped during their Delhi march.

The cops have sought permission from the Kejriwal government to use the city's nine stadiums as temporary jails due to the farmers' 'Delhi Chalo' march.

Policemen have been deployed heavily at the border to stop agitators from entering. Sand-laden trucks and water cannons have been placed at many entry points, besides barbed wires.

The Delhi Metro today announced that exit and entry gates would be closed at six metro stations on the Green Line in view of the protest threat. According to a DMRC statement, "Entry & exit gates of Brigadier Hoshiar Singh, Bahadurgarh City, Pandit Shree Ram Sharma, Tikri Border, Tikri Kalan and Ghevra stations on Green Line are now closed."

Haryana, meanwhile, has put in place prohibitory orders under Section 144 in several areas to stop protesters from gathering.

Here's all that is currently happening:

— Air India waives no-show charges and allows one free-rescheduling for passengers whose travel from Delhi-NCR was hindered due to the protests.

— Protesting farmers at the Delhi-Haryana Singhu border pelted stones and broke barricades as they clashed with Delhi Police which used tear gas shells to disperse them.

— Angry farmers, who were denied entry into the national capital for their 'Delhi Chalo' march, managed to break the first layer of barricading at the border.

— Plumes of smoke were seen as security personnel used multiple rounds of tear gas to disperse the protesting farmers at the Singhu border.

— Farmers groups, including women, have continued their march towards Delhi on Friday while protesting and raising slogans on the main highway in Sirsa. "Whatever we do will be peaceful. We will not harm any person or property. Even if we have to stay for a month, we will. Even if we will have to attain martyrdom, we will," said one of the farmers.

— Amid the face-off, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said the voice of farmers cannot be "muzzled" and asked the BJP-led Centre to hold talks immediately with peasants to defuse the situation.

— Why wait for December 3 for holding talks with farmers when the situation is getting out of control now, Singh asked the Centre.

— Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain has denied permission to police to use stadiums as temporary jails.

— Vehicles moved bumper-to-bumper on key roads after the Delhi Police closed several border points with Haryana.

— Dhansa and Jharoda Kalan borders were closed for traffic movement. Commuters were told to take alternative routes.

— Tikri Border is completely closed for traffic movement by local police. Traffic intending to go towards Haryana is also closed. "All motorists are advised to avoid this route in view of the protest by Kishan Sangharsh committee,” it tweeted.

— Security tightened at Delhi-Haryana border near Faridabad and Singhu village. Forces from at least two police stations, besides three CRPF battalions, deployed at the Delhi-Faridabad border.

— Security has been strengthened near Karna lake in Haryana's Karnal. A traffic jam has been witnessed on the Delhi-Jammu highway due to protesters' movement.

— In Amritsar, Kisan Mazdoor Sangarsh Committee have been seen loading tractor trolleys with essentials that reportedly include food material and cooking utensils.

— Priyanka Gandhi has slammed the BJP, saying that "instead of listening to the voices of the farmers Modi govt is using water cannons to disperse them in cold weather."

— Everything is being taken away from the farmers while the capitalists are being given banks, airport, railway stations and loan waiver, the Congress leader tweeted.
