NEW DELHI: India will hand over 200 houses on Tuesday to Myanmar built for Rakhine State under the Rakhine State Development Programme (RSDP) for $ 25M for a period of five years.

The focus of RSDP has been on sustainable solutions based on creative socio-economic development. A Pilot Project under RSDP has been construction of the 250 pre-fabricated house at three villages in Northern Rakhine State.

The project was undertaken by Indian companies -- M/s Hindustan Prefab Limited as Project Management Consultant and M/s Enertech Limited as contractor.

All 250 houses have been completed. The first 50 houses were handed over to Myanmar by the President of India during his State visit to Myanmar in December 2018. The remaining houses will be handed over by Ambassador of India Saurabh Kumar to Myanmar on Tuesday. Several Myanmar Ministers will be present on the occasion. The houses are designed to survive earthquakes and cyclonic storms besides being rust free and water proof.

India signed a development programme for Rakhine State in Myanmar in late 2017 which was designed to assist the Myanmar government in Rakhine State to build housing infrastructure for displaced persons, which senior Indian officials said was appreciated not just by the government of Myanmar but also by the United Nations and other agencies. More than 700,000 minority Rohingya Muslims fled from Myanmar’s Rakhine state to neighbouring Bangladesh since August 2017, triggering a massive refugee crisis.

Meanwhile Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday dismissed a recent proposal by a US congressman that Myanmar’s Rakhine state should be brought under Bangladesh territory and suggested that rather to mobilize campaign for safe return of over a million Rohingyas to their homeland. "...we are happy with our 1,47, 000 square kilometer territory," she told a press meet when asked for comments on Congressman Bradley Sherman’s proposal during US congress’s hearing on State Department’s budget for South Asia last week.
