Lone was a minister in the PDP-BJP government in the erstwhile state of J&K and was detained on the intervening night of August 4 and 5, 2019, when the J&K Reorganization Bill was passed and the state was downgraded into two Union Territories.
The administration officially claimed that around 7500 people in J&K including Hurriyat leaders, activists and three former chief ministers including Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were detained in wake of the August 5 decision.
Moments after his release order Lone tweeted that jail was not a new experience, but it was psychologically draining.“Finally 5 days short of a year I have been officially informed that I am a free man. So much has changed. So have I. Jail was not a new experience. Earlier ones were harsh with usual doses of physical torture. But this was psychologically draining. Much to share hopefully soon,” he tweeted. Lone was first detained at a convention center on the banks of Dal Lake and later shifted to MLA hostel before being finally kept under house arrest at his government residence in Church Lane.
