    Labour ministry mulls national policy for domestic workers

    Synopsis

    “A draft national policy on domestic workers is under consideration of the central government,” Gangwar said in a reply to the Lok Sabha.

    Santosh Kuamr Gangwar-led labour ministry on Monday said it is considering a national policy for domestic workers in the country to recognise domestic household help as eligible beneficiaries of rights of workers. The policy, if finalised, will benefit 50 lakh domestic workers in the country including maids and drivers amongst others.

    “A draft national policy on domestic workers is under consideration of the central government,” Gangwar said in a reply to the Lok Sabha.

    According to the reply, the salient features of the draft policy include inclusion of domestic workers in the existing legislations, domestic workers will have the right to register as workers which in turn will facilitate their access to rights and benefits accruing to them as workers.


    Besides, domestic workers will have the right to form their own associations or trade union, will be entitled to minimum wages, access to social security and protection from abuse, harassment and violence.

    The draft national policy has also proposed mechanism for regulation of placement agencies handling domestic workers, right to enhance their professional skills and have access to courts, tribunals.
