Mumbai: Thousands of farmers from across Maharashtra started gathering at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan on Sunday in solidarity with the farmers’ protest in Delhi against the three farm laws passed by the Centre last year. In tractors, jeeps and many of them walking barefoot, thousands of farmers entered the city around 2 pm.

The farmers will head to the governor’s residence on Monday to present a memorandum against the farm laws and also seek a law to ensure a remunerative minimum support price (MSP) for crops. The march will conclude on Tuesday, Republic Day, at Azad Maidan.

The ruling coalition, Maha Vikas Aghadi, has declared full support to farmers for this protest. Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar said he will join the farmers on Monday and “also walk with them” as a gesture of solidarity against the farm laws.

While the farmers assembled under the banner of Samyukta Shetkari Kamgar Morcha, a grouping of farmer organisations opposed to the farm laws, the march primarily derives its strength from the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) which has gathered farmers from 21 districts in the state. They are being led by AIKS national president Ashok Dhawale, Kisan Gujar and state general secretary Ajit Nawale.

“All the three parties in the MVA government have expressed support to our cause,” Nawale told ET en route to Azad Maidan. “Besides NCP chief Sharad Pawar, we will have Congress leader and revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat in our march. Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray has already promised us support.”

He said environment minister Aaditya Thackeray is also likely to attend the march. Nawale said the agitation will also be supported by factory workers and other workers of the Democratic Youth Federation of India and the All India Democratic Women’s Association.
