Covid-19 in Maharashtra: CM Uddhav Thackeray hints at extension of lockdown if norms are not followed
MUMBAI: Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said the state was doing extremely well in its fight against Covid-19 but urged people to practice social distancing.

He also hinted that the lockdown may continue if the social distancing norms are not followed and cases rise. “But I am confident people will listen to the government’s rules and guidelines since it is taking care of their welfare,” said the chief minister.

Thackeray was interacting with the media after announcement of the postponement of the state legislature’s monsoon session from June 22 to August 3. “The fight against Covid-19 is still on. We have to live with the coronavirus. We have allowed resumption of activities as the economy cannot come to a standstill… People need to maintain social distancing, wear masks and wash hands.”

Referring to the crowd photographed at Marine Drive recently, the CM said: “We have allowed relaxations so that people can go outside and do some exercise. Relaxations have not been given for people to fall ill.”

Thackeray said the state government is assessing the situation before resuming public transport services. However, he reiterated that the Centre should allow local train services in the Mumbai Metropolitan region to help healthcare and essential services personnel commute. According to him, many essential services personnel could not reach hospitals since trains were not running.
