Guwahati: Six out of the eight Congress MLAS who skipped the trust vote in the state assembly have resigned. On Monday, the Biren Singh-led BJP coalition government in Manipur had won the trust motion by a voice vote during which eight of the 24 Congress MLAs abstained despite a three-line whip issued by Congress.

Led by Okram Henry Singh, the MLAs submitted their resignations to the Speaker.

A Congress leader, who did not want to be named, told ET, “The remaining two MLAs who abstained are also likely to resign.”

Henry Singh, nephew of former CM and Congress legislature party leader, Okram Ibobi Singh, is the Congress rebel leader. Henry, along with Imo Singh, the son-in-law of the Manipur CM Biren Singh, had voted for the BJP candidate during the recent Rajya Sabha polls.

Show-cause notices have already been issued to the two MLAs who cross-voted in the polls. The Congress leader said disciplinary action might be taken against the rebel Congress MLAs after discussions with the party high command.

Ningombam Bupenda Meitei, Congress spokesperson in Manipur, said: “Under which Rule of the Conduct of Business in the Manipur Legislative Assembly and Article of the Constitution of India, has the Speaker banned the live streaming of yesterday’s (Monday’s) trust vote? What is the timing of the acceptance of the resignation letters of the six Congress MLAs by the Speaker? Can the Speaker accept the resignations during the session when the whip was already issued to all Congress MLAs many days before?”
