The flow of distress calls has increased after the lockdown extension as frustration is peaking with most workers complaining of lack of food and many seeking help to facilitate their return home.
Sixteen helplines had been set up towards the end of March to help migrant workers who wanted to come back home due to the lack of food and money. Nodal officers –– senior IAS officers heading different departments in the state –– were appointed to supervise the work of attending to complaints and engaging with the authorities in other states to address the problems that workers register.
