    Synopsis

A review by the government panel found that except for a few departments, most of the ministries failed to achieve their targets on implementation of Hindi up to the target level in their day-to-day work. New Delhi: A government panel on official language has pulled up some central ministries and departments for failing to implement the use of Hindi up to the target level in their day-to-day work.

A review by the committee has found that barring a few like the department of space, most have failed to achieve their targets on implementation of Hindi for 2018-19, ET has learnt.

Key cabinet ministries like home affairs, defence, foreign affairs and finance have failed to get the desired results, while no officials from the cabinet secretariat attended the two-day evaluation process.

“Some of the ministries like urban development and steel have improved in their daily correspondence in Hindi but failed on other counts,” the committee said. The implementation committee for central official language under the home ministry said that officials who have not been trained in the use of Hindi require immediate training.

The panel desired that all the government organisations should come up with websites in two languages – one of them being in Hindi. It also asked to set all the computers in dual-language mode.

A Hindi vocabulary of 4,000 English words was demonstrated to all the ministries. The panel asked the ministries to add more words to the vocabulary by suggesting translation from English to Hindi, officials said. Home minister Amit Shah’s statement to promote Hindi as official language at the recent Hindi Diwas rally was also cited during the review.
