    Mizoram holds local council polls while following COVID-19 protocols, social distancing

    Guwahati: Mizoram on Thursday held elections for 500 village councils and over 70 local councils.

    Mizoram State Election Commission (MSEC) officials said that following the COVID-19 protocol and social distancing the elections were held. Counting of votes would be held on Friday.

    The official said, “Polling was peaceful and there was no report of any incident. Around 4, 54,180 voters will determine the outcome of 558 village councils across and 2, 18, 758 voters will decide the fate of 83 local councils under Aizawl Municipal Corporation”.

    There are 8,491 candidates in the fray. Political parties including ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, Zoram People’s Movement, Mizoram People’s Conference, National People’s Party and Hmar People Convention have fielded their candidates.

    Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga tweeted, “Thanking all the election officials and every part-taker for providing a safe platform to many voters in exercising our constitutional franchise amidst this pandemic.”
