Anti-CAA protests in TN: MK Stalin, others booked
CHENNAI: The Chennai City Police has filed cases against DMK Chief MK Stalin, youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin, leaders of DMK allies, and scores of cadre who participated in the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 on Monday, according to people aware of the police action against the protesters.

The Chennai City Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan had told the Madras High Court earlier that he had denied permission to the protests. The court ordered that drone-held cameras should capture visuals of the protests so that political leaders will be held accountable in case of any violence.

The rally on Monday, led by MK Stalin and with the participation of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, proceeded peacefully and saw a turnout that ran into several thousands.

Protests intensified in various places across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, with cities such as Salem and Krishnagiri witnessing large turnouts.

Tamil Nadu chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami had held that the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 would not harm "any Indians living in India," making it the AIADMK stance too, but the DMK has been agitating against the law. MK Stalin, in his statement on the rally, had said it was not merely a political rally, but one that saw the participation of the general public, citizen groups, minority forums, and so on.

On Monday, a German national Jakob Lindenthal, studying Physics at IIT Madras, had to leave the country after his participation in protests last week was found in violation of visa rules governing his stay in India.
