No one will be sent to detention camp: Assam Minister Chandra Mohan Patwary

With apprehension doing the round that those whose names that does not figure in National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be sent to detention camp, Assam Industry Minister Chandra Mohan Patwary allayed the fear and said that no one will send to detention camp.
Assam government’s Cabinet subcommittee on NRC, which was supposed to meet to discuss on the status of people whose name will be not there in the NRC, did not take place on Monday.

On July 12 the committee held meeting and it was decided that on July 23 the meeting will be held to discuss the legal status of those status of those persons whose name will not figure in NRC. However the meeting did not take place.

A senior officer told ET, “The meeting did take place on Monday.”

After the July 12 meeting Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a tweet stated, “Today I held a meeting of Cabinet Sub Committee to discuss about the issues which may crop up before the Govt of Assam on legal status of persons whose names will not figure in the draft National Register of Citizens, to be published on July 30.”

Centre has sanctioned first standalone detention camp which will house declared foreigners, this has fueled speculation that this is done in view of NRC process.

The camp will come up in Goalpara district in a year’s time with an investment of Rs 46 Crore. This will be the first standalone detention camp with capacity of 3500 persons.There are six detention camps operating in the state however those are operating from within the jail premises. In six detention camps there are around 1000 detainees.

On Monday Assam cabinet had its meeting, when asked industry minister, Patwary said, “No one will sent to detention camp and people will get enough scope to file claim and objections once the final draft NRC is published on July 30. There is nothing to worry.”

Meanwhile flood ravaged Southern Assam’s Hailakandi district has completed the process of updation of the draft NRC.

An official communique stated as all works pertaining to family tree verification, process for scrutinizing gaon panchayat certificate for married women, special verification and other connected investigations have been completed.

Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan has issued an order releasing all the Government employees, including District Magistrate Authorised Officers, Investigating Officers, Special Verification Officers, assisting staff and from their assigned NRC work with immediate effect

The publication of the second draft NRC missed the June 30 deadline because of the recent deluge that severely affected work on several days in Hailakandi, Karimganj and Cachar districts of Barak Valley, West Karbi Anglong and Hojai. Around eight to ten working days were lost. In the three districts of Barak Valley, work at nearly 90 NRC seva kendras (NSKs) had been affected.
