    NRC final draft on July 30, Aasu hopes it will be 'error-free'

    The NRC is updated as per the provisions of Assam accord of 1985. Aasu is a signatory of the Assam Accord.

    GUWAHATI: With Supreme Court on Monday extending the date for publication of final draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) to July 30, All Assam Students Union (Aasu) is hopeful the process would be error-free.

    A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and R F Nariman extended the date after considering the report of state NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela in which he explained how floods in several districts of the state hampered work on the NRC. Earlier the court had set June 30 as the date of publication of the final draft.

    The NRC is updated as per the provisions of Assam accord of 1985. Aasu is a signatory of the Assam Accord.

    AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said the organisation is hopeful that on July 30 the final draft of NRC will be published.

    The partial draft of NRC was published on December 31, 2017. Names of around 1.90 crore people appeared in the first draft.

    Meanwhile, a team of senior Government of Assam officers led by Chief Secretary, T Y Das and including Kuladhar Saikia Director General of Police (DGP), Pallab Bhattacharyya Spl DGP (Special branch) and Mukesh Agrawal Additional DGP Law and Order visited Cachar District and took stock of the law and order and internal security in the districts of Cachar, Karimganj Hailakandi and Dima Hasao.

    The Deputy Commissioners and superintendent of police and senior officers of police, Army and other Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and Indian air force engaged in the districts took part in the discussion.

    “Various issues relating to internal security and emerging law and order situation were discussed threadbare. The importance of constant interaction with people from all walks of life to allay any apprehension of public, the facility available pertaining to claim and objection of NRC, awareness programme and other relevant issues were highlighted,” an official statement said.
