NEW DELHI: The monsoon may wash out Durga Puja celebrations in eastern India as the weather office has forecast torrential rains in the region in the days ahead.

"Isolated very heavy rainfall (115.6-204.4 mm/day) is also likely over coastal Odisha and adjoining areas of coastal West Bengal on 22 October," the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday.

A fresh low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify further this week, it said. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and parts of the northeast will also get heavy rains due to this phenomenon, IMD said.

Even after the monsoon season officially ended on September 30, heavy rains due to the La Nina phenomenon caused widespread flooding in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and interior Maharashtra, leading to reports of crop damage. The Agricultural Meteorological Department of IMD had told ET that it is keeping a close watch on the weather systems, and is promptly informing farmers to harvest even at 80% maturity if there is the possibility of damage due to unseasonal rain.

Despite another low-pressure system, the monsoon will retreat from northern, central, and western India, after remaining stagnant for nearly two weeks.

"Conditions are becoming favourable for further withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon from remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northern parts of West Bengal and Sikkim, Jharkhand, remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, northern parts of Chhattisgarh, remaining parts of Gujarat, and northern parts of Maharashtra during next 2-3 days," IMD said.

This year could see one of the most delayed monsoon withdrawals since the weather bureau started recording such data in 1975.
