MUMBAI: Indian investigating agencies are preparing to make a renewed pitch before the Interpol for issuance of a red notice against controversial televangelist Zakir Naik, who has run into further trouble and is facing the heat from Malaysian authorities over his racially sensitive remarks Twice in the past, Interpol had rejected National Investigation Agency’s (NIA’s) request to issue an RCN against Naik; but this time the Enforcement Directorate (ED), probing money laundering and terror funding charges against Naik, has decided to write to the Interpol, at least two people in the know of the development told ET.

The move assumes significance as it comes at a time when the Malayasian authorities have banned Naik from delivering public speeches after he allegedly made racially sensitive comments. Naik has apologised subsequently. An Red notice is a request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action. Earlier in May, the ED had filed a prosecution complaint equivalent to a charge sheet against Naik and his aides.

The federal agency had claimed to have identified proceeds of the crime to the tune of Rs 193.06 crore of which properties worth Rs 50.46 crore have been attached. The charge sheet stated that ED’s investigation had revealed “mostof the incriminating speeches of Naik were delivered during the 10-day peace conference organised by the now proscribed Islamic Research Foundation.” (IRF)”.
