    Trade unions expect 25 cr workers to participate in nationwide strike against farm and labour laws

    The 10 central trade unions on Tuesday said they expect 25 crore workers across sectors to participate in the nationwide general strike called by the unions on November 26, demanding withdrawal of agricultural reforms and the labour reforms by the government, which they termed as anti-farmer and anti-workers.

    The 10 central trade unions on Tuesday said they expect 25 crore workers across sectors to participate in the nationwide general strike called by the unions on November 26, demanding withdrawal of agricultural reforms and the labour reforms by the government, which they termed as anti-farmer and anti-workers.

    The members of central trade union organisations comprising INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC and independent federations and associations are expected to participate in the strike.

    The trade unions have been demanding government stop privatisation of public sector enterprises including the financial sector and stop corporatisation of government run manufacturing and service entities like Railways, Ordnance Factories and ports among others.

    Besides, they have been seeking cash transfer of Rs 7500 per month for all non income tax paying families, 10 kg free ration per person per month, expansion of the rural employment guarantee scheme the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act to provide 200 days’ work in a year in rural areas at enhanced wages and extension of employment guarantee to urban areas.

    “The independent sectoral federations and associations in the central and state government employees and in the public sector enterprises have served the strike notice in most of the places,” the central trade unions said in a joint statement on Tuesday while reviewing the preparation for the general strike.

    “Similarly the industrial units in the private sector, big and small, also have submitted notices to this effect in most parts of the country,” it said, adding that the scheme workers, domestic workers, construction workers, beedi workers, hawkers, vendors, agricultural workers, self employed in rural and urban India have decided to join the strike.

    According to the statement, the auto and taxi drivers will keep off the roads in many states on Thursday. “The federations of Railway and defense employees have decided for large mobilization on the day to express their solidarity to this strike action and the demands of the unions,” they said in a statement.
