What happened to Clause 6 report on Assam Accord, questions students' body

GUWAHATI: All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Friday questioned as to what happened to the report of clause 6 committee of Assam Accord.

The clause 6 panel submitted its recommendation to the chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal who accepted the same on behalf of the Union Home minister Amit Shah in February this year.

All Assam Students' Union which had three members in the panel questioned what happened to the report.

Couple of members earlier in the social media platform have been questioning as to what happened to the report.

AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya, who is member of the committee, said that Centre has been saying that they are waiting for recommendation however though several months have elapsed there is no word on the report. “The government has been saying that they will implement the report in Toto without even altering coma and full stop. But in reality there is no intent to implement the same.”

Clause 6 provides for constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards to protect the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people. The 14 member panel is headed by Justice (retd) Biplab Kumar Sarma.

Meanwhile, AASU has decided to intensify protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). AASU is spreading movement against CAA.

AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, “Soon we will have discussions with other like-minded organisations and intensify our protest against CAA.”

The Act, which aims to make minority communities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible to apply for Indian citizenship is being challenged in the Supreme Court.

On Thursday, AASU supporters in Sasoni formed a human chain to protest against CAA.
