New Delhi: The Yogi Adityanath government has approved the scripts of Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Article 15’ and Ajay Devgn starrer 'Raid' for state grant given to films shot majorly in Uttar Pradesh.

The critically-acclaimed ‘Article 15’ based on caste-related violence was inspired by the controversial Badaun case of UP during the Samajwadi Party regime in 2014 when two girls were found hanging from a tree. It was among the 22 movies whose scripts were approved by a committee of UP’s Film Bandhu agency in a meeting on June 8.

The film starring Ayushmann Khurrana and directed and produced by Anubhav Sinha spoke about upholding the constitutional provision of prohibiting discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, religion, or sex and was shot in UP.

The state government provides monetary aid of up to Rs 2 crore, subject to the fulfillment of certain conditions, for movies shot majorly in the state, and whose scripts are approved for such grants by a script committee.

The other mainstream Bollywood movie whose script was approved at the meeting was Ajay Devgn and Saurabh Shukla starrer ‘Raid’ which was released in 2018 and is inspired by a real-life incident of the country’s longest income tax raid on the house of a Congress MLA in Kanpur in 1981.

The other 20 scripts that were cleared were of regional films. The UP government has released Rs 65 lakh as a grant for Swara Bhaskar-starrer 'Nil Batte Sanatta' movie, Rs 60 lakh for Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer ‘Babu Moshai Bandookbaaz’ and Rs 2 crore apiece for Akshay Kumar's 'Toilet Ek Prem Katha' and Sridevi starter 'Mom'.

Large parts of these movies were shot in UP. Film Bandhu agency aims to attract Bollywood and regional filmmakers to shoot in the state to develop UP as a hub of film production by generating a friendly climate and promoting film-related activities. The films are given grants from a "Film Development Fund".

UP’s film policy was framed in 2015 under the Akhilesh Yadav regime to offer incentives to Hindi filmmakers for shooting in the state. The Yogi Adityanath government in 2018 extended the policy to films shot in UP in any language, including English.
