KOLKATA: Cab aggregator Uber has partnered with Walmart-owned e-commerce marketplace Flipkart for last mile delivery of essentials using the Uber fleet in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru which would be eventually extended to other cities.
Uber India and South Asia director operations and head of cities Prabhjeet Singh said the partnership with Flipkart went live on Monday making it the third such partnership in India after Spencer’s Retail and BigBasket.
“Flipkart being a leading e-commerce player with a dedicated customer base, this service will help to reach a lot of people,” he said.
Flipkart's chief corporate affairs officer Rajneesh Kumar said this partnership is to help move essential supplies from its sellers/vendors to customers in the shortest possible span of time.
"Flipkart remains committed to supporting our customers and we are mobilizing all possible options to ensure that in this national fight against Corona, we can support the governments, by delivering essential supplies to people who are staying indoors," he said.
Singh said Uber is in talks with other retailers and players who may be keen to utilise Uber’s existing mobility infrastructure for reaching consumers home with essentials.
“This service will enables containment of Covid-19 and also offer our driver partners opportunity to participate in earning opportunity making it a win-win for everybody. We are not charging any commission and all the earnings in these business to business deals is directly passed on to the driver partner allowing them extra earning opportunity,” said Singh.
Uber India has undertaken training sessions for its driver partners in health and safety standards and provided them with mask, gloves and sanitizers.
