Agility is key. My first job was a pharmaceutical salesman with Eli Lilly Ranbaxy. I was a 22-year old graduate student and was the only commerce graduate who had made it as a trainee at a pharmaceutical company. There was a rigorous two-month training, post which I was posted in Kolkata, which also happened to be my hometown. An important brief which I was given during the training and which has stuck with me ever since was to be agile and keep looking out for potential opportunities.
The best leadership lesson I learnt
A big part of my job was to convince doctors to adopt our research molecule over that of other competing brands. My manager helped me transform from being a transactional sales person to someone who nurtures and values relationships. He encouraged me to first build a connection with prospective clients and get to know them better so as to understand what they really need. This involved building a rapport to discuss interests, hobbies, passions, beliefs, families and, most importantly, sports.
The worst mistake I made
Failures sometimes are our greatest teachers. During my rookie years, I overlooked the importance of developing a cordial relationship with clinic and hospital staff in order to get enough appointments with doctors. Over time, I recognised their contribution towards helping receive adequate face time with doctors.
What did fun at work mean to me
As a young graduate, fun at work meant having the financial independence to go out with friends and family and exploring new places during off days.
How I managed work-life balance
A high point during my initial work years was having a Yamaha bike to commute and utilise the freedom of mobility towards expanding my network. At that age, the hunger to perform and the passion for the job is elevated and the thrill of a first job helped me manage my work-life balance.
