Wipro Chairman Azim Premji said the financial benefits of sustainability for any organisation needs to be spelt out in a bid to encourage more people towards exercising their duties.
The software services industry veteran believes industries and businesses should focus on “pervasive implementation” of policies and nudge people to act upon sustainability efforts.
He added that there is a clear profit motive in efforts such as conservation of water, energy, recycling of waste. “That keeps us going.”
Wipro earthian is one of India’s prominent sustainability education programmes for schools and colleges and its 2018 edition received 1300 entries, out of which winning entries from fourteen schools and ten colleges were selected by an independent jury.
Premji, a philanthropist who pledged half of his wealth, has significantly contributed towards quality education.
The Wipro earthian awards have seen a threefold increase in the number of participants since inception in 2011. The programme has engaged with more than 55,000 schools and colleges, 130,000 students and 13,000 teachers from across India.
Premji also said that Wipro's upcoming office facility at Kodathi on Sarjapur Road would be a real example of a sustainable and energy efficient workplace.

“I think many organizations realize that there is profit in sustainability. And that to any organization, apart from social consciousness, is the biggest motivator towards sustainability. Those profit equation should be clearly spelt out for people to really appreciate how much extra profits they can generate from lower carbon emission, for a better water usage for better disposal of waste, etc,” said Premji at the Wipro earthian awards.
