In his previous stint he served as the US Presidential Appointee in charge of Technology Transformation Services where he was responsible for the technology transformation strategy, roadmap, and agenda across the US federal government. He oversaw a $100 billion technology budget, and worked closely with the White House, Agency leadership, and the Federal CIO.

Cheriyan will oversee the company’s Global IT, Global Security, Strategy, Alliances, and Business Development organizations and will report directly to chief executive Brian Humphries. As the company’s leader of Technology, he will be responsible for informing strategy, digitizing the business, and strengthening IT and Security capabilities and resilience, according to Cognizant.

In a note to employees on Monday, Humphries said “Anil will oversee Global IT led by Rakesh Bhardwaj, Global Security led by Dan Smith, and the Strategy, Alliances, and Business Development (including Accelerator) team led by Brad Berry. I believe this is the first time Cognizant will have a technology leader reporting directly to the CEO, which is fitting as IT transitions from being a support function for clients’ business models to becoming the essence of their businesses.”

Humphries added that, Cherian "accelerated the transformation of several federal agencies, leveraging industry-leading talent in AI, cloud, digital platforms, data and analytics, identity, and citizen experience."

Greg Hyttenrauch, President of Digital Systems and Technology at Cognizant, who was managing Cognizant’s IT and Security remediation efforts in addition to his core responsibilities since April 2020, will continue to focus on leading Digital Systems and Technology.

Prior to the government role, Cheriyan served as Executive Vice President and CIO of SunTrust Banks, where he led the bank’s digital, operations, and data transformation practices.
