Union minister for communications, electronics and information technology Ravi Shankar Prasad and union minister for commerce & industry Piyush Goyal will present their vision for India’s rise as Startup Nation.

If there is one thing that typifies the optimism that a brighter future lies ahead of India, it is the startup sector.

The digital economy will be at the forefront of driving such innovation and inclusiveness, more so now than ever before, making this another theme that the two ministers will reflect upon.

The past year has been exceptionally hard for businesses globally, and more so for smaller and younger companies. But amid the pandemic, Indian entrepreneurs have demonstrated enormous resilience. Buoyed by the energy of founders and an abundant flow of capital to Asia’s third-largest economy, India is now a global hotspot where startups are building products and solutions for both local needs and global users.

The virtual ceremony will also include a panel discussion on Starting Up and Scaling in a Post Covid World-Opportunities & Challenges, with participation from some of India’s leading entrepreneurs and investors such as Nithin Kamath, cofounder and CEO, Zerodha (winner of ET Startup of the Year); Anju Srivastava, founder and CEO, Wingreens Farms (winner of Woman Ahead); Sriharsha Majety, cofounder and CEO, Swiggy; Bejul Somaia, partner, Lightspeed Venture Capital and Sandeep Naik, head of India & Southeast Asia, General Atlantic.

The ET Startup Awards, a testament to this newspaper’s commitment to covering entrepreneurship, are typically presented in eight categories with each one reflecting an important aspect of starting up. This year, to mark the enormous fortitude and creativity displayed by Indian startups amid a raging pandemic, ET has chosen to institute a new award for Covid-led innovation.

Earlier on August 20, an elite jury chaired by Tata Consultancy Services CEO Rajesh Gopinathan met virtually to pick the winners of India’s most coveted awards for startups. The jury members included Kalyan Krishnamurthy, CEO, Flipkart; Byju Raveendran, founder and CEO, Byju’s; Sanjeev Bikhchandani, founder, Info Edge; Bejul Somaia, partner, Lightspeed Venture Partners; Roopa Kudva, MD, Omidyar Network India; Satyan Gajwani, vice chairman, Times Internet Ltd; Larry Illg, CEO, Prosus Ventures (formerly Naspers Ventures); Sahil Barua, cofounder and CEO, Delhivery; and Albinder Dhindsa, cofounder and CEO, Grofers.

The final winners were chosen after a rigorous process that began with nominations from some of the most influential founders and investors in the country. Shortlists of five candidates in each category were prepared by ET’s editors in consultation with knowledge partner Tracxn, with the winners chosen by the jury reflecting the very best of Indian entrepreneurship.
