In a bid to make electric vehicles mainstream, Tata Motors, India's largest electric vehicle maker on Wednesday introduced the Tiago EV at a disruptive price of sub-Rs 10 lakh. The entire range of Tiago EV will be priced between Rs 8.49 lakh to Rs 11.79 lakh ex-showroom.

This is an introductory price for the first 10000 bookings, the company said. The bookings will start on 10th of October and the deliveries will begin in January of 2023.

Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility told ET, the Tiago EV will help the company take electrification to more masses and make it a mainstream offering.

"We think the EV powertrain could account for a third of our total Tiago sales. Apart from expanding the portfolio, we are also opening up many new markets and the coverage will now cross over 160 locations, which will bring in a lot of incremental buyers," said Chandra.

Tata Motors is set to close FY-23 with sales of close to 50000 units. People in the know say, Tata Motors is already planning for a production plan of 1 lakh EVs in the next financial year.

The company sells about 7500 units of Tiago hatchback, the incremental volumes for the EV could be in excess of 2500-3000 units.

Chandra is non-committal on volumes but said, "the company is set to exit with a double digit share for our EVs of our total volumes. With the Tiago EV and the new models expected in the next calendar year, the share will only move up."

Tata Motors claims that the Tiago EV is not only accessible but the company has spruced up the offering with features seen in two segments above - like connected car technology, rain sensing wipers, automatic HVAC, ventilated leatherette seats.
