    BXX is top Covid 19 sub-variant now

    The Indian Sars-CoV-2 Consortium on Genomics (Insacog), a network of laboratories monitoring genomic variations of Covid-19 virus in the country, has found that BXX sub-variant has become dominant in the country accounting for over 50% of Covid-19 cases.
    However, the good news is that the severity and hospitalisation have not increased, a member told ET. BXX is a recombinant variant.

    "BXX has replaced BA2.75 which is now accounting for 25-30% of Covid-19 cases," the same person said. BA.2.75 was the dominant variant till last month.

    An Insacog member said they are monitoring the situation. A review meeting was held on Friday to evaluate Covid-19 situation in the country.

    In the last few weeks multiple Omicron sub-variants like BQ.1 and BXX have been detected in the country along with other emerging sub variants like BA5.1.7 and BF.7. Even as Covid-19 numbers recede, experts are not ready to declare victory over Covid-19 yet.
