All routine and elective dental procedures, the ministry said, should be deferred for a later review until new policy guidelines are issued. It also deferred the National Cancer Screening Programme due to the high risk associated with examination of the oral cavity, oral cancer screening.
The emergency procedures that need to be considered are uncontrolled bleeding of dental origin, trauma involving the face or facial bones, dental abscess, unavoidable dental extractions/post-extraction complications, dental treatment for patients requiring cardiac surgery, hospitalised patients requiring dental care for acute problems, and patients requiring dental treatment for radiotherapy /organ transplantation.
