A total of 1,492,409 tests were conducted as of 8 am on Friday, according to data on the health ministry website. Cumulatively, over 6.89 million tests have been carried out, with the average per million at 49,948. A total of 10 million tests were conducted over the past nine days. Uttar Pradesh leads in testing with over 8.94 million tests carried out so far, followed by Tamil Nadu with over 6.6 million and Maharashtra at just over 6 million.
“We need to increase testing in all the states,” said Giridhara R Babu, a member of the ICMR taskforce. “It’s not only the numbers, but who we test and which test we use that are also significant.” The positivity rate dropped to 5.77% nationally on Friday, after hovering around the 8.5% level for most of the past two weeks.
